Visiting Meadowview Alpaca Farm
Do I need to book in advance to visit?
Yes! Visits are by appointment or scheduled experience times so we can make sure everyone stays safe and gets a hands-on experience with our alpacas. As a working farm with equipment moving around, we want to keep everyone safe. You can book your tour here.
What is included in a farm visit or tour?
Your tour will last about 45–60 minutes. You'll meet our alpacas and our friendly llama in two pastures, get a chance to pet some of them, learn about their soft fleece, and see how we shear them. We'll finish in our Fibre Studio and Gift Shop, where you can touch the fibre after it comes back from the mill and see some of the fun things we make.
How long does a visit last?
Most of our farm experiences take about 45–60 minutes—just the right amount of time to meet the animals and explore the farm.
Can I pet the alpacas?
Absolutely! We have several friendly alpacas that love meeting new people. You'll be guided on how to safely interact with them and feel their soft fleece up close.
Can I bring my dog or pets to the farm?
We love pets, but for the safety of our alpacas and visitors, we ask that you leave furry friends at home. Pets shouldn’t be left in vehicles either, as that can stress our guardian dogs and the alpacas.
Can I bring food or treats for the alpacas?
Alpacas have very sensitive tummies, so we only let them eat the grain or feed we provide during tours. Please don’t bring outside treats.
What should I wear when I visit?
We recommend closed-toe shoes or boots, weather-appropriate layers, and sun or rain protection. Most of the tour takes place outside, so dress comfortably!
Is the farm accessible for strollers or wheelchairs?
Yes! Most areas are accessible, but keep in mind that some spots have gravel, grass, or uneven terrain. We’re happy to lend a hand if you need it.
Can I take photos or videos with the alpacas?
Absolutely! Alpacas are great little photo-bombers, so snap away. Don’t forget to tag us on social media—we love seeing your pictures!

About Alpacas
What is an alpaca, and where do they come from?
Alpacas are gentle, domesticated members of the camelid family from the Andes mountains of Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. They’re mostly raised for their soft, luxurious fleece.
How are alpacas different from llamas?
Alpacas are smaller and have finer fleece. Llamas are larger, with longer faces and banana-shaped ears, and are often used for carrying loads rather than fleece.
Are alpacas friendly?
Yes! They’re naturally curious and gentle, but as prey animals, they prefer calm movements. Each alpaca has its own personality.
Do alpacas spit at people?
Mostly, alpacas spit at each other to settle herd disagreements. They rarely spit at people unless they feel threatened or caught in the middle of a squabble.
Do alpacas bite or kick? Are they dangerous?
Alpacas don’t usually bite—they only have bottom front teeth. They can kick if startled, but overall they’re gentle and safe to be around.
What do alpacas eat?
They mainly eat grass and hay, with a mineral supplement. Their efficient digestion means they need less food than many other livestock.
Can I feed the alpacas when I visit?
For their health, alpacas can only be fed the treats or grain we provide. Please don’t bring any outside food.
Why do people raise alpacas?
Most people raise alpacas for their fibre, which can be made into yarn, clothing, and home goods. Many farms also offer educational visits and farm experiences.
What is alpaca fibre like?
Alpaca fibre is soft, warm, lightweight, and hypoallergenic. Many people find it more comfortable than sheep’s wool.
Are there different types of alpacas?
Yes, there are Huacaya alpacas with fluffy, crimpy fleece and Suri alpacas with silky, dreadlock-like fleece.
Alpaca Care & Behavior
How long do alpacas live?
Alpacas generally live 15–20 years with good nutrition, shelter, and veterinary care.
Can an alpaca live alone?
No—they’re herd animals and need the company of at least two or three other alpacas to feel secure.
How much land do you need for alpacas?
It depends on your climate, but many small herds do well on just a few acres with good pasture rotation and shelter.
How often are alpacas sheared?
Once a year, usually in spring. Skipping shearing can be dangerous, as alpacas can overheat in the warmer months.
What is a baby alpaca called?
A baby alpaca is called a cria. They gestate for 11–12 months, and most births happen during the day.
Do alpacas make noise?
Yes, alpacas communicate with gentle humming, clucks, snorts, or alarm calls if something startles them.
Can alpacas live with other animals?
Many farms keep alpacas near sheep or goats, but new animals should be introduced carefully. Dogs must always be controlled around them.
